The Early Era (1650s - 1880s): Originally a seasonal fishing station for Basque and French sailors, the town was known simply as "Le Grand Éclat" (The Great Shard). The "Grand Rock" served as a natural lighthouse, guiding ships safely into the bay during North Atlantic storms.

Inauguration of the Deep-Water Port, transforming a fishing village into a major Atlantic industrial hub.
The Industrial Pivot (1890s - 1950s): While nearby villages remained small, Grand Rocher’s deep-water port allowed it to become a primary shipping hub for timber and salted cod. The construction of the railway along the base of Cap-Joli in 1912 and instalment of La Compagnie Fraser & Co (Famille Fraser) transformed the village into a bustling town.

Urban Expansion: Grand Rocher officially reaches 40,000 residents and opens the Regional Hospital Center.
The Modern Expansion (1970s - Present): Grand Rocher centralized the region's healthcare and maritime research. The founding of the Institut Maritime du Grand Rocher (IMGR) turned the city into a global leader in cold-water oceanography.

L'expansion moderne (années 1970 - aujourd'hui): Grand Rocher a centralisé la recherche sur les soins de santé et les sciences maritimes de la région. La fondation de l'Institut Maritime du Grand Rocher (IMGR) a fait de la ville un leader mondial de l'océanographie de l'eau froide.
